Just after Christmas

27 Dec
Well it's not 2 long after christmas. I got really cool gifts this year. I also gave a few cool things. Some new movies for the library. My dad also got me a new dvd holder. It holds other things, but it most likely will be holding dvds. Got some new items for my kitchen set. That is really cool. Finished reading Timeline. Allot better than the movie. The movie had maybe a dozen or less things similar 2 the book. I am still reading "The Book Of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi. I don't know when i will finish it. My dog Abby is still the baby of the house. She whines allot. Not only does she want 2 be in the house with u but if try 2 take a shower and close the door, she will sit outside of it and whine like noone cares about her. Very sad :( Oh well. I am going 2 go see school of rock 2night. I have heard from allot of friends that it is good. I 1/2 2 return some of the gifts that i got for christmas. They r broken. That really sucks. My brother got his gift last night. A game he wanted for his mac. I think macs or just overpriced paper weights. But who am i? Well i want 2 go find something 2 eat. I am hungry and have not had any food 2day.

Later.

Video Editor

Well MainConcept has a new version of there Linux NLE out. This is really cool. I have been waiting for this product to go into production. This is not production, but one step closer. Also... on a different topic. I wrote Macromedia so time ago and asked them why they did not port there Flash Editor to Linux. I also said that it would be hard for them to compete if someone in the Linux community created a free version. Well it now looks like a free version is being created. It does not have all the features currently, but i am sure over a short time the list of missing items will shrink. I hope that this project does really good, and that other companies that are holding out from a Linux port take notice. If we can match feature for feature, also add some really cool ones of our own, while giving it away for free, someones product line will start to suffer. The only thing that i can think of is Macromedia making a native port and getting it out there before f4l has time to create any momentum, and building a strong user base. :D

SCO Vs. IBM

05 Dec
I have been following the SCO case now ever since it started. I am a big Linux fan and enjoy having it on my computers. I have not had a problem with viruses or any of the other items that plague Windows users. Well today IBM won the first round with SCO in the case about IBM putting code into Linux that was owned by SCO. SCO has not to this date, and this started back in March, shown us any code that IBM put into Linux. A good site that has keep up on the legal side of this case is Groklaw. The latest article covering the loss of SCO is here. There is another good article here, that gives a good overview of American history. I plan on reading more when i get home and visiting the sites that are linked to in the article.

Avid Xpress DV

05 Dec
Here is something that i posted to avid. I don't think that they will respond. Seeing that i am not a customer and won't be one until they port there product to Linux, i can see why they would not respond to my message.

I have read on your message board and have wanted myself a port of Avid Xpress Dv to linux. However this does not look like it is going to happen. Then i ask myself "Why is Avid holding out?". You have FinalCut Pro for Macs, So many for the Windows group that there is no need to list here. Then what we have is major studios moving there animators over to Linux. Movies are being done on Linux, but where can we find a good NLE for Linux? Avid saying that they are a leader in this field should have been on that platform by now. Are they? No! Why? That is the question that i want answered. I can see that before Linux had such high usage that it would not have been profitable to port the product to Linux. But now Avid has ported the product to Mac OS X which is a BSD(UNIX) product. How much harder would it be to port Xpress DV to Linux. And to be honest don't tell me that there will be no profit in a port to Linux. Well how much profit is Avid getting off the free version of Avid Free DV that is on the website? I don't think it's the full feature version of Xpress DV? So someone had to take time to make a light version for free use? I could be wrong. What is the big hold up? The way Apple is buying up composite software and we all know that it is going to go into FinalCut Pro. Avid will find it harder to compete. But we will have loyal customers. Well you today loyalty only gets you so far. When it comes down to paying and i can get allot more software for little dollar, than your customers might just pick the other package. This message is for me Ed Mann (edmann.com) to Avid as a wakeup call. Look not only at today and the next quarter, but look down the road 1 or 2 years. See where your competitors are today and what they are doing and how that will postion them against you in the future.

I have also posted this message in my personal blog you can find it at
www.edmann.com/blog/blogs/index.php?p=30&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

I hope that i get a response back.

Thanks for your time.
